Modèle des Nations Unies (MUN) : Nos délégués à New York !

 

Du 17 au 21 mars, 30 élèves de la Seconde à la Terminale ont eu la chance de participer à la Conférence de Modélisation des Nations Unies pour les lycéens (NHSMUN) à New York, organisée par l'Association internationale des Nations Unies pour les jeunes (IMUNA).

NHSMUN consiste en quatre journées remplies d'événements et de réunions, au cours desquels nos délégués ont pu assister aux cérémonies d'ouverture et rencontrer des élèves venus du monde entier.

Notre délégation a rejoint plus de 6 000 participants venus de 70 pays pour une simulation des Nations Unies d'une semaine. Nos élèves ont participé à des débats et des négociations sur des enjeux mondiaux cruciaux, tels que l'accès aux technologies spatiales, l'intelligence artificielle et l'avenir de l'éducation, la souveraineté des nations insulaires menacées de disparition et la préservation des langues autochtones.

Cette conférence est l'aboutissement de mois de recherche sur l'histoire et les positions diplomatiques des pays représentés. À l'image de la véritable ONU, l'objectif est d'identifier des solutions par la négociation et le consensus.

 

 

Pour cette édition 2026 à New York, Rochambeau représentait la Jordanie et la Colombie.

Avant le départ, nos élèves ont eu le privilège de se rendre à l'ambassade de Jordanie pour s'entretenir avec le chef de mission adjoint et approfondir leurs dossiers.

 

Le premier jour à New York a débuté par une visite culturelle au MoMA le matin, suivie des sessions de formation l'après-midi. Déjà vêtus de leurs costumes de diplomates pour certains, nos délégués ont perfectionné l'art de la prise de parole en public et les règles de procédure.

 

Une ouverture mémorable

 

Lors de la cérémonie d'ouverture, l'invité d'honneur était Mike Pompeo, ancien directeur de la CIA et Secrétaire d'État. Parmi de nombreuses questions soumises, celle d'Antoine Mathieu (élève de Terminale) a été sélectionnée pour être posée en direct ! La soirée s’est conclue par un spectacle caribéen absolument fantastique.

Tout au long de la semaine, nos élèves, en comités, ont participé à des débats et à la recherche de résolutions communes portant sur un large éventail de problèmes mondiaux. Ils ont participé à de nombreuses séances dans lesquelles ils ont développé leur aptitude au discours, à la négociation et au débat à travers la rédaction de textes. Cette conférence a permis à nos délégués d’incarner un diplomate onusien et d’acquérir des connaissances pratiques en relations internationales, des compétences en négociations internationales et stratégiques ainsi qu'en art oratoire.

 

Sept ans d'engagement

 

La mise en place de ce voyage scolaire et la préparation des élèves ont été rendus possibles grâce à l'encadrement durant l’année de Mme Rancé et M. Thouret. Ce club MUN - Rochambeau illustre la volonté de l’établissement, depuis sept ans, de développer des compétences-clés telles que l'empathie, la résolution de conflits et une compréhension approfondie des relations internationales chez nos élèves.

Le processus est long et fastidieux mais très similaire à ce qui se passe en réalité à l'ONU. Bravo à nos délégués MUN pour leur travail, leur persévérance et leur dévouement à ce projet !

From March 17 to March 21, 30 students from 10 to 12th grades had the incredible opportunity to participate in the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) conference in New York, organized by the International Model United Nations Association for Youth (IMUA).

NHSMUN consists of four days packed with events and meetings, during which our delegates were able to attend the opening ceremony and connect with students from all over the world!

Our delegation joined more than 6,000 participants from over 70 countries in a week-long simulation of the United Nations, engaging in debates and negotiations on pressing global issues such as Access to Space Technology, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Education, Sovereignty of Disappearing Island Nations, and Preserving Indigenous Languages. 

This conference was the culmination of months of student research by to gain insights and understanding of a country and how its leaders may take a position on into a variety of topics. Student delegates develop possible solutions to problems and debate their assigned topics with others representing UN member states. Much like the real UN, the goal is to identify solutions, by engaging in negotiation with the goal of arriving at consensus.

For the 2026 edition in New York, Rochambeau represented Jordan and Columbia.

Before New York, our students had the opportunity to go to the Jordanian Embassy to meet with the embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission and ask him questions about the committees they will be representing.

On the 1st day in New York, our students visited MoMA in the morning. They had their training sessions in the afternoon. Some had already put on their diplomat suits! They learned the art and rules of public speaking.

For the opening ceremony, the guest of honor was Mike Pompeo, former CIA director and Secretary of State under President Donald Trump. Our students submitted questions before arriving, and Antoine Mathieu’s (Rochambeau senior) question was selected! At the opening, there was a fantastic Caribbean show that was amazing! 

Our students participated in committees, engaging in debates and working together to develop resolutions addressing a wide range of global issues. They took part in numerous sessions in which they honed public speaking, negotiation, and debate skills through drafting texts. This conference allowed our delegates to step into the role of a UN diplomat, acquiring practical knowledge of international relations, strategic negotiation skills, and public speaking.

This trip was made possible thanks to the guidance of Ms. Rancé and Mr. Thouret. For the past seven years, the Rochambeau Model United Nations (MUN) Club has exemplified the school’s commitment to developing key skills such as empathy, conflict resolution, and a deep understanding of international relations among our students.

The process is long and tedious, but made intentionally very similar to what happens in real conferences and negotiations at the UN. Well done to our MUN delegates for their hard work, perseverance, and dedication to this project!
